Wie findet man ein Zimmer oder Apartment in New York?
Jeder der schon mal in New York war ob beruflich oder privat weiß wie schwer es ist eine Unterkunft zu finden. Letztes Jahr habe ich mit einer Freundin in East Harlem gewohnt, aber das war mir zu weit weg von dem Geschehen. Diesen Sommer wollte ich gerne zentraler wohnen, aber ohne vor Ort zu sein ist es immer schwierig in New York etwas zu finden. AirBnB ist eine gute Anlaufstelle, aber das würde ich euch nur empfehlen wenn ihr ein paar Tage nach New York kommt, weil die Preise viel zu hoch sind hochgerechnet auf eine monatliche Basis. Alternativ gibt es auch noch Wg-gesucht und roommates, aber da findet man auch nicht immer etwas. Besonders bei Craigslist muss man aber aufpassen. Ich habe zwei Freundinnen, die auf der Seite ein Zimmer gemietet haben und die erste Monatsmiete vorher bezahlt haben und es das Zimmer leider nie gab und sie dadurch eine Menge Geld verloren haben. Deshalb habe ich mir dieses Sommer eine Alternative rausgesucht 'Manhattan Next'.
Die Agentur ist spezialisiert auf internationale Studenten und junge Professionals und vermittelt ihnen Zimmer und Apartments ohne, dass man wie üblich in den USA eine Social Security Nummer haben muss oder einen Job. Dadurch erspart man sich natürlich viel Arbeit. Ich habe der Agentur mein Budget genannt und meine präferierte Location und dann haben sie mir ein paar Alternativen rausgesucht und ich habe mich letztlich für ein Zimmer im East Village entschieden. Ich bin super happy mit meinem Zimmer und der Wohnung, da die Agentur auch darum bemüht ist die Mitbewohner so ähnlich wie möglich zu gestalten. Ich wohne mit drei anderen Mädels, alle Amerikanerinnen und alle mein Alter. Ich kann euch die Agentur wirklich weiter empfehlen um ein Zimmer oder Apartment zu finden, die Mitarbeiter sind wirklich super nett und haben die Agentur gegründet nachdem sie selber nach New York für ihr Studium gezogen sind. Außerdem habt ihr bei der Agentur keine Maklergebühren und nur eine geringe Agenturgebühr.
How do you find a room or apartment in New York?
Everyone who has been to New York for work or pleasure knows how difficult it is to find a nice apartment that is also affordable. Last summer when I interned in New York I shared an apartment with a friend in East Harlem but to get anywhere from there always took forever. This summer I decided to find something else, something more central where I could walk to places from my apartment. The first website I looked at was AirBnB as I have made good previous experiences with it but everything ended up being super expensive on a monthly basis and I can really only recommend it if you are looking for a place for a few days. Next, I've also checked out 'Wg-gesucht' and roommates but there wasn't really anything there for me. My last resort of known places to look for a room was 'Craiglist' but when you're not in town this website can be super sketchy. I have two friends who paid a month of rent upfront without seeing the apartment in person and they both lost their money.
So I decided to look for a different agency that would look for a room for me and I stumbled upon 'Manhattan Next'. Manhattan Next specialises on international students and young professionals and gives them access to rooms and apartments. The major benefit with them is that you do not need a social security number nor a job in order to rent. This saves you a lot of unnecessary work. I told the agency my budget and my preferred location and then they went ahead and sent me some apartments to look at. I choose one in the East Village as I love the location and you can reach anything you need by foot. I am very happy with my room and especially my roommates as they are all my age and luckily have the same interest. The agency tries to place people of similar age and interests together to create a better living experience and I think it succeeded very well here. Another major benefit is that they have no broker fee, just an agency fee that is much lower. The agency is run by internationals who have been through the same moving process themselves and thus know all the issues very well. During your stay they are also available through email and phone to help you with any issues.
